Variable Speed
In a variable speed furnace, the fan motor can be used at multiple speeds to control the heated air being dispersed throughout your home. This results in a more comfortable home in regards to the humidity and temperature. Even if the furnace is not running, the fan can still be used to circulate the air in your home. This gives you better indoor air quality, as the air is constantly going through the filter. Having this airflow can greatly reduce the amount of time the furnace needs to actually run, which can lower your utility bills.
Two Stage
A two stage furnace is basically as it sounds. It has two stages it uses to heat your home. The first stage will run at about 65%. Once it gets colder, and the first stage is not enough to satisfy your homes heating needs, the second stage will kick in to provide the additional heat requirements. Also, a 2 stage furnace is much quieter than a single stage, since it does not run at 100% capacity every time. This also causes less emissions for the environment.
Single Stage
A single stage furnace only has an “off” and an “on” mode. When it turns on, it is running at full capacity, every time. The only stage of heat output this type of furnace has is high. This can be very expensive to run in the winter, since it is always dispersing the most amount of energy it can while it is on.
